The Serie A champions are keen to lure the Italy international away from his current club, but might wait until next year in order to get him on the cheap.
Riccardo Montolivo could stay with Fiorentina for now as AC Milan have decided not to pursue the Italy international in the summer transfer window, La Gazzetta dello Sport reports.
The Serie A champions are eager to add another midfielder to their squad and had allegedly earmarked Montolivo as the perfect addition to their current roster.
Nevertheless, they have refused to meet Fiorentina's hefty demands and have therefore postponed their transfer plans until January 2012.
Milan are hopeful that Fiorentina will lower their demands in the January transfer window and will try to sign Montolivo on a Bosman move next year if they fail to lure him away from his current club halfway through the season.
Montolivo has a contract with Fiorentina until the summer of 2012 and has already made it clear that he won't sign an extension to his current deal.
Milan secured the services of Ajax midfielder Urby Emanuelson for a cut price in January 2010, while they signed Roma's Philippe Mexes and Marseille defender Taye Taiwo on a Bosman move this summer./Goal/
