Milan chief Adriano Galliani has revealed that he came close to signing a teenage Xavi from Barcelona. The Spaniard is now regarded as one of the world’s top players and a Barca legend given that he’s only played for the Nou Camp outfit.
Nevertheless, in 1999, he was on the verge of accepting a move to the Rossonero side of the San Siro.
“We had basically signed Xavi,” Vice-President Galliani told Sky Sport Italia.
“However, the operation was not completed for family reasons – his mother got in the middle of it.”
Xavi was 19-years-old at the time and had only just completed his first season with Barca after graduating from Barcelona B.
Instead of moving to Italy, Xavi signed a new contract with his Spanish side and he’s gone on to win every major trophy for club and country./Football-Italia/
