The new co-ownership signing hopes to make an impression on the club's fans and bring European glory to the side.
Alexander Merkel revealed that he will do everything in his power to help Genoa qualify for Europe.
The 19-year-old joined Alberto Malesani's side this summer on a co-ownership deal with his former club AC Milan.
"I want to do my best with Genoa. We must take things one game at a time. Certainly a Europa League position would be a nice finish," he stated.
Merkel then explained his attraction to the port city and his shirt number.
"I live near the sea, so I like Genoa. I chose number 52 because it brought me fortune in the past. I hope the young fans of the city buy my jersey."
The German midfielder then stressed his tactical flexibility as something for his coach to keep in mind.
"I can play as a trequartista, but that is up to the coach. I have no idols as I like to learn from my team-mates."
